A Chat with John Carter on the New Congress

Republicans in Congress are willing to work with President-elect Barak Obama on tax cuts, according to Congressman John Carter as reported in the Temple Daily News (1/8, Kruse).  “’I think that we will be a loyal opposition,’ Carter said. “And we will support those things that we think make good sense. For instance, I think he (Obama) is going to get full support from every Republican on these tax cuts he is proposing.”  Carter went on to discuss the future of the War in Iraq and Afghanistan, universal health care, Medicare, and Social Security.

Carter also pledged strong personal efforts to clearing up continuing ethics problems since Democrats took control of the House in 2006, saying that public confidence must be restored. “The ethics of the United States Congress has become an issue where the American people think we’re all crooks. If you have an approval rate of 8 percent, that means that your family doesn’t even like you. … .I spent 20 years trying to give a fair and impartial trial to people in Williamson County, and I think that justice demands swiftness. I’m going to be talking about a lot of ethical issues in the next two years.”

Carter Fights Democrat Roll-back of House Fairness Rules

House Republican Conference Secretary John Carter of Texas joined all members of the House GOP Leadership in blasting Democrat’s opening day move to gut House reforms in place for over a decade.  According to  Human Events (1/5, Hair), “Pelosi’s proposed repeal of decades-long House accountability reforms exposes a tyrannical Democrat leadership poised to assemble legislation in secret, then goose-step it through Congress by the elimination of debate and amendment procedures as part of America’s governing legislative process.”

The move by Democrats was similarly denounced in Commonsense and Wonder  (1/5, blog);  2 Amusing  (1/5, blog), and the Williamson Republic (1/5, blog).  The Connecticut Commentary (1/5, blog) reported the move as “Speaker Pelosi puts her foot down.”
